The Lagos State Government has expanded its poverty alleviation and skills acquisition programmes as part of efforts to improve livelihoods, promote entrepreneurship and create more economic opportunities for residents.
State officials said the expanded initiatives are designed to empower vulnerable groups, including women, youth and low-income households, through vocational training, entrepreneurship support and access to income-generating opportunities.
According to the government, the programmes will provide participants with practical skills in various trades, alongside business development support, mentoring and, where applicable, access to start-up resources to help beneficiaries establish or grow small businesses.
Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader economic development agenda, which seeks to reduce unemployment, encourage self-reliance and strengthen micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
Development experts say skills acquisition programmes play a vital role in reducing poverty by equipping individuals with employable and entrepreneurial skills. They add that such initiatives can improve household incomes, stimulate local economies and foster inclusive economic growth when supported by access to finance and market opportunities.
Economists also emphasize that sustained investment in vocational education and workforce development is essential for addressing youth unemployment and meeting the evolving demands of the labour market. They argue that partnerships between government, the private sector and training institutions can enhance the effectiveness of skills development programmes.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding social intervention initiatives that improve the welfare of residents while supporting long-term economic resilience. Officials said the programmes are expected to contribute to job creation, financial inclusion and poverty reduction across the state.
Analysts note that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, continues to attract a growing population, making investments in human capital development increasingly important. They say expanding skills acquisition and poverty alleviation programmes can help build a more productive workforce and strengthen the state’s economic competitiveness.
Observers believe the initiative will enhance opportunities for residents to acquire marketable skills, establish sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the continued economic development of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.
