The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is planning to introduce East Africa’s first exchange-traded fund (ETF) focused on artificial intelligence (AI), a move aimed at expanding investment opportunities and strengthening the region’s capital markets.

The proposed fund is expected to give investors exposure to companies involved in artificial intelligence and related technologies, reflecting growing global interest in AI-driven innovation across sectors such as finance, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications and logistics.

Officials said the initiative forms part of the exchange’s broader strategy to diversify investment products, attract new categories of investors and position Kenya as a regional financial hub.

An ETF is an investment fund that trades on a stock exchange and typically tracks the performance of a basket of assets, allowing investors to gain diversified exposure through a single financial product. Market analysts say AI-focused ETFs have gained popularity globally as advances in machine learning, automation and data analytics continue to reshape industries.

Experts note that introducing an AI-themed ETF could encourage greater participation in Kenya’s capital markets by retail and institutional investors seeking exposure to emerging technologies without investing directly in individual companies.

The proposal also aligns with Kenya’s broader digital transformation agenda, which has seen significant investment in financial technology, digital infrastructure and innovation. Analysts say expanding access to technology-focused investment products could support capital formation while encouraging greater awareness of emerging industries among investors.

Financial experts caution that, like all equity-based investments, AI-focused ETFs are subject to market risks and may experience price volatility, particularly in rapidly evolving technology sectors. They advise investors to consider their financial objectives, risk tolerance and investment horizon before making investment decisions.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the Nairobi Securities Exchange’s product offerings and enhance its competitiveness among African capital markets. Market observers say introducing innovative investment instruments can improve market liquidity, attract foreign investment and support long-term economic growth.

If launched, the AI-focused ETF would mark a significant milestone for East Africa’s financial sector, highlighting the region’s growing interest in technology-driven investment opportunities and the evolving role of capital markets in supporting innovation and economic development.
