Human rights activists in Kenya have called for the immediate release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, expressing concern over his continued detention and urging authorities to uphold the rule of law and respect fundamental human rights.

The activists made the appeal during a demonstration in Nairobi, where they urged the Ugandan government to ensure due process and guarantee Besigye’s constitutional rights. They said political differences should be resolved through lawful and democratic means, emphasizing the importance of protecting civil liberties and political freedoms.

Besigye, a veteran opposition politician and longtime critic of the Ugandan government, has remained a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape for more than two decades. His detention has drawn attention from regional and international human rights organizations, which have called for fair legal proceedings and adherence to international human rights standards.

The demonstrators also urged the East African Community (EAC), the African Union (AU) and other regional bodies to encourage dialogue and support efforts aimed at safeguarding democratic principles and the rights of political actors across the region.

Human rights advocates argue that the protection of freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and political participation is essential to democratic governance. They stressed that legal processes involving political figures should be conducted transparently and in accordance with national and international legal obligations.

Political analysts say the development reflects growing regional concern over governance, political freedoms and human rights in East Africa. They note that the treatment of opposition figures often attracts scrutiny because of its implications for democratic institutions and the rule of law.

Observers also emphasize the importance of constructive dialogue among governments, opposition groups and civil society organizations in promoting political stability and preventing tensions from escalating.

Ugandan authorities have maintained that legal proceedings involving Besigye are being conducted within the framework of the country’s laws. However, rights organizations continue to call for an independent judicial process, respect for due process and the protection of detainees’ rights.

The demonstration in Kenya underscores the cross-border interest in political developments within the East African region and highlights ongoing calls for governments to uphold democratic values, protect human rights and strengthen public confidence in judicial institutions.
