Trump-Netanyahu meeting to focus on Iran talks and Gaza

The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House is expected to focus heavily on two urgent issues: Iran’s nuclear talks and the ongoing war in Gaza. Netanyahu rushed to Washington to press Trump to adopt a tougher stance in negotiations with Tehran, particularly on Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal, which Israel views as a direct threat. Trump, on the eve of the meeting, suggested he was weighing sending a second U.S. “armada” to the Middle East to increase pressure on Iran to reach a deal.

At the same time, the Gaza conflict looms large over the talks. Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling continue, with the humanitarian toll mounting. Reports indicate that more than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 171,000 wounded since October 2023. The Rafah crossing has seen groups of patients and wounded individuals returning, while Israeli raids in the West Bank have intensified, leading to further clashes and civilian suffering.

The meeting is being closely watched internationally, as it comes at a moment when U.S. policy in the Middle East is under scrutiny. Netanyahu is expected to push for stronger American backing against Iran, while Trump faces pressure to balance support for Israel with growing global concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

This encounter could set the tone for U.S.–Israeli relations in the months ahead, particularly on how both governments coordinate strategies against Iran while managing the fallout from the Gaza war.
