Türkiye and Somalia have signed a landmark defense cooperation agreement focused on cash assistance during the 17th edition of the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025, currently underway in Istanbul. The agreement, formally titled the “Amendment Protocol to the Cash Assistance Implementation,” was signed on Thursday by Turkish National Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi.

The signing underscores Türkiye’s expanding defense and diplomatic engagement with the Horn of Africa, especially Somalia—a key strategic ally in the region. The agreement aims to enhance Somalia’s defense capabilities through structured financial assistance, building on previous military and training cooperation between the two nations.

IDEF 2025, one of the world’s premier defense expos, kicked off Tuesday and spans six days across multiple prominent venues in Istanbul, including the Istanbul Fair Center, Ataturk Airport, Wow Hotel, and Atakoy Marina. Organized by KFA Fairs with the backing of Türkiye’s Defense Industries Secretariat (SSB) and the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, the event showcases cutting-edge defense technologies and fosters global security partnerships. Anadolu Agency serves as its global communication partner.

This agreement comes as Somalia works to bolster its security institutions amid ongoing threats from insurgent groups, while Türkiye continues to strengthen its geopolitical influence across Africa through defense diplomacy, infrastructure investments, and humanitarian support.
