Hosts Morocco secured top spot in Group A at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal, thanks to a first-half penalty converted by Yasmin Mrabet following a VAR-reviewed incident. The result means the Atlas Lionesses advance to the quarter-finals unbeaten, finishing level on seven points with Zambia but edging the Copper Queens on goal difference.

The pivotal moment of the match came late in the first half at a packed Olympic Stadium in Rabat, where Moroccan striker Ibtissam Jraidi was struck in the face by Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye during a collision. Referee Shamirah Nabadda initially missed the incident but was called to the VAR monitor. Despite the review screens indicating a possible red card, Nabadda awarded a penalty and issued only a yellow to Ndiaye. Mrabet made no mistake from the spot in the second minute of stoppage time, scoring Morocco’s third penalty of the tournament.

The win ensured Morocco will remain in Rabat for their quarter-final clash on Friday, where they will face one of the best third-placed teams from Group B or C. Meanwhile, Zambia defeated DR Congo 1-0 in Mohammedia with a ninth-minute goal from Racheal Kundananji, securing their spot in the last eight. The Copper Queens are set to face Nigeria in what promises to be a thrilling showdown—should the Super Falcons maintain their unbeaten run.

DR Congo’s hopes were dashed after Falonne Pambani was sent off in the second half, reducing their chances of a comeback. Senegal, who finished third in the group with three points, must now await confirmation on whether they will qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

The atmosphere in Rabat was electric, with a full house, pounding drums, and giant Moroccan flags contributing to a celebratory scene. However, the match itself was a scrappy affair, dominated by officiating decisions. Both teams had goals ruled out for offside, and referee Nabadda was kept busy, issuing seven yellow cards and reviewing several contentious moments via VAR.

While Senegal showed spirit, they rarely threatened the Moroccan goal. Morocco, led by captain Ghizlane Chebbak, looked the more composed side and created better chances but lacked clinical finishing.

As the WAFCON 2024 quarter-finals approach, Morocco and Zambia join Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa, and Mali in the next stage, with fans eagerly anticipating the knockout drama ahead in Morocco’s capital and beyond.
