At least eleven security forces personnel and one child were killed on Tuesday in a militant attack in the northwestern Bajaur district of Pakistan, the military said, marking one of the deadliest recent assaults on security forces in the region. Seven others, including women and children, were also wounded in the incident, officials added.
The attack occurred in Bajaur, part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that borders Afghanistan and has been a focal point of militant violence as various armed groups, including factions of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), continue to target security forces and civilians.
Pakistan has been grappling with a surge in insurgent activity in northwestern tribal areas for several years. Militants in the region have frequently carried out bombings, gun assaults, and suicide attacks on military checkpoints, police posts, and government installations, even as counter-terrorism operations continue.
The toll in the latest attack underscores ongoing security challenges on the Afghan border amid broader instability in neighbouring areas. Pakistani officials have blamed militant groups for exploiting rugged terrain and alleged safe havens across the border, claims that Kabul has repeatedly denied.
Authorities have not immediately released details about the group responsible or the exact circumstances leading up to the assault. Rescue and security operations were underway following the incident, with local officials coordinating emergency response efforts and investigations into the attack.
