Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever American-born pontiff, has shared his four all-time favourite films just before hosting a special audience with Hollywood stars and Oscar-winning directors at the Vatican.
In a video released by the Vatican on Wednesday, the Chicago-born Pope unveiled a heartwarming and emotional list that reflects his deep appreciation for stories about hope, faith, and humanity.
Topping his list is Frank Capra’s timeless 1946 classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring James Stewart a film that captures the power of kindness and redemption as an angel intervenes to save a man on the brink of despair.
The pontiff also included “The Sound of Music” (1965), the beloved musical directed by Robert Wise, which celebrates courage and the strength of family in times of turmoil.
Another favourite is Robert Redford’s emotional drama “Ordinary People” (1980), a powerful exploration of grief, healing, and forgiveness within a struggling family.
Completing Pope Leo XIV’s list is Roberto Benigni’s “Life Is Beautiful” (1997), the poignant story of a father’s unbreakable love as he shields his son from the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II.
As the Vatican prepares to welcome some of Hollywood’s biggest names, the Pope’s cinematic choices have sparked global conversation highlighting how powerful storytelling can inspire compassion, hope, and faith across cultures and generations.
