A third inmate has died following a violent attack at Pollsmoor Prison that left two prisoners dead and two correctional officers injured earlier this week. The deadly clash erupted on Wednesday morning, triggering chaos inside the high-security facility.

According to the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU), two correctional officials sustained serious injuries during the incident and were rushed to hospital for treatment. The Department of Correctional Services confirmed on Friday that a third inmate, who had been hospitalized since the attack, has now succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities say the violent outburst began when prisoners launched a stabbing attack against correctional officers, prompting the use of force to restore control. The department has since launched a full investigation into the cause of the assault and assured that measures are being reinforced to ensure the safety and stability of the facility.

Pollsmoor Prison, located in Cape Town, has a long history of overcrowding and gang-related violence, raising renewed concerns over inmate safety and prison management.
