In its first 150 days in office, the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) has made significant strides toward laying a solid foundation for long-term regional transformation, according to its Managing Director. Rather than being hindered by funding concerns, the Commission has focused on fulfilling its policy and oversight responsibilities, prioritizing strategic planning and inclusive engagement across all sectors.

The Commission’s primary focus has been on developing a comprehensive and people-centered plan that aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “We Need Hope” agenda. To ensure the plan reflects the yearnings of the people of the Southeast, the SEDC conducted extensive stakeholder engagements involving the private sector, federal and state governments, local authorities, civil society organizations, academia, and, most recently, international development partners operating in Nigeria.

The Managing Director emphasized that while funding remains important for executing projects and programs, the success of any government agency is largely determined by its ability to formulate sound policies and secure stakeholder buy-in. “What we’ve done is develop a clear, inclusive roadmap that will serve as a catalyst for sustainable growth in the Southeast,” he said, adding that the Commission has also energized development partners to play an active role in the region’s future.

Despite misconceptions, the MD clarified that there are no funding challenges derailing the Commission’s mission. The implementation phase of the 2025 budget is set to commence, and the Commission is ready to begin rolling out initiatives that reflect the collective aspirations of the Southeast population. The groundwork laid in the past 150 days, particularly through consultations and institutional strengthening, is expected to yield visible results soon.

The SEDC is calling on private investors, international agencies, and residents of the region to collaborate in bringing the ambitious plan to life. “We’ve waited 54 years for a moment like this. Now, we’re determined to ensure that our actions bring hope, prosperity, and sustainable development to the Southeast,” the MD concluded.
